The City of Powell was established in the early 1800s. It was founded in 1801, two years before Ohio became an official state. It is located in Delaware County, Ohio, just 14 short miles away from Downtown Columbus between the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers. According to the census bureau, Powell has a total area of a little less than five square miles, all of which is land.
It sits inside Liberty Township as the site of the first settlement in Delaware County. Its first settlers migrated from the town of Middlebury, Connecticut, so the town was originally named Middlebury. However, in 1857 a judge named Thomas Powell established its first post office, and to honor him, the townspeople named the town after him. Yet, the town of Powell did not reach city status until the year 2000, when it reached over 14,000 residents. Then in July 2005, Powell was ranked by CNN Money and Money magazine as the 18th best place to live on its list of the “100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.”
Today, the City of Powell has a total estimated population of 13,000 residents, and the city is still growing. Delaware County, where the City of Powell resides, is known as the 35th wealthiest county as of 2020.
