Homeowners often call us for furnace repairs throughout the year where they have unwittingly damaged their heating system. We’ve noticed that this could be due to following advice you’ve heard from friends, online forums, and maybe even social media posts. But, don’t worry, it happens. We can all get caught up in gossip; that’s why Lewis Center-Powell Heating & Air chose some of our five-star technicians to break down a few common furnace myths.
Myth 1: Close Your Vents To Close Off Heat
Closing your vents in certain rooms sounds pretty intelligent, right? Well, I am here to tell you that your furnace gives the same amount of heat no matter which vents you close or don’t close throughout your home. So, be mindful when closing your vents; this can and sometimes will overwork it. Our experts suggest keeping your vents open; on top of that, it gives a good airflow throughout your home when you keep them open.
Myth 2: It Is Normal To Have Cold Feet
You may think that it’s normal for your feet to stay cold because you have hard floors. However, if your feet are freezing, your house needs better insulation because the generated warm air from your furnace is dissipating, and cold air is coming through. In addition, you should check to make sure your home has sealed windows and doors, which will ensure proper ventilation.
Myth 3: Maintenance Isn’t Mandatory
Manufacturers advised that each side of the system needs to be inspected and serviced once per year, in spring for air conditioning and fall for heating and furnaces. Please don’t skip this as it can cause you to have unnecessary costs.
Myth 4: Filters Needs To Be Changed Once A Year
Like oil changes are mandatory for your car. It is so with your filters. Our experts recommend changing your air filters once a month; however, some filters can be changed every 60-90 days. Make sure to check the instructions for your HVAC unit and filters.
We know it’s easier to allow social media and friends to be the news for your updated knowledge; however, listening to experienced experts will better suit your home.
