DISCOVERING Worthington, OHIO
The City of Worthington is a northern suburb of Columbus that was settled and founded in 1803 by the Scioto Company. It was then named in honor of a politician named Thomas Worthington, who was elected the governor of Ohio. According to the city records, he helped the town’s founders in acquiring the land. The current population of the city is 14,692 residents and is continually growing. Worthington is said to be one of the first planned communities in the midwest. Oddly enough, it settled the same year Ohio became a state, in September of 1803, by a group of families moving there by wagon from Granby, Connecticut.
By 1804 the plat maps and payments were completed, and in January of 1805, the town had established three government buildings, a church, a school, and a library.
Then in 1808, the city constructed a commercial building for a newspaper. That building still stands today on High Street and is the oldest of its kind.
Today, Highways that pass through, or stand adjacent to, Worthington are State Route 315, U.S. Route 23, State Route 710, State Route 161, Interstate 270, and Interstate 71—making it accessible from virtually a straight shot from anywhere in the city.
